Many experts in the field of family therapy believe that individuals are like gears in a watch; they function as part of a system and are linked together. The behavior, thinking and feeling of one family member affects the other family members. When one member of the system becomes less functional due to divorce, substance abuse, trauma, or illness, the other members usually respond to bring stability to the system. Over time, a dysfunctional member can cause confusion, turmoil to the family. Indeed, our work with children and adolescents shows that parental involvement in treatment is the best indicator for successful outcomes.
